Sorry, haven’t done one of these in a while (my blog has became rather fandom orientated but I’ll try get some reviews going again). I’m kind of sitting on the fence with this one so if anyone has read it, please leave me a message on your thoughts :)
The technology to download the consciousnesses of pilots into multiple clones, the Capsuleers, has finally delivered the dream of immortal soldiers. Train a soldier just once and then however many times he dies he will keep on getting more experienced, more battle toughened, as his brain is downloaded into a ready supply of cloned bodies. But no-one anticpated the effects of the multiple traumas, the multiple stresses of multiple lives and deaths on the battle field. War is hell. And now it can last forever for everyone.
p.s. I found this one in a bookstore on the island of Bute. Should you ever visit; go look for it in Rothesay - it’s definately one of my favourite.

I still haven’t got around to reading ‘Warbreaker’ yet but this author seems to create  fantasy gold from what I’ve heard.

A thousand years ago evil came to the land and has ruled with an iron hand ever since. The sun shines fitfully under clouds of ash that float down endlessly from the constant eruption of volcanoes. A dark lord rules through the aristocratic families and ordinary folk are condemned to lives in servitude, sold as goods, labouring in the ash fields. But now a troublemaker has arrived and there is rumour of revolt. A revolt that depends on criminal that no-one can trust and a young girl who must master Allomancy - the magic that lies in all metals.

Also bought this, sounds pretty good:
Warbreaker is the story of two sisters, who happen to be princesses, the God King one of them has to marry, a lesser god, and an immortal trying to undo the mistakes he made hundreds of years ago. Theirs is a world in which those who die in glory return as gods to live confined to a pantheon in Hallandren’s capital city. A world transformed by BioChromatic magic, a power based on an essence known as breath. Using magic is arduous: breath can only be collected one unit at a time from individual people. But the rewards are great: by using breath and drawing upon the color in everyday objects, all manner of miracles and mischief can be performed.

Books I keep meaning to read:
When the doors of the lift crank open, the only thing Thomas remembers is his first name. But he’s not alone. He’s surrounded by boys who welcome him to the Glade - a walled encampment at the centre of a bizarre and terrible stone maze. Like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they came to be there - or what’s happened to the world outside. All they know is that every morning when the walls slide back, they will risk everything - even the Grievers, half-machine, half-animal horror that patrol its corridors, to try and find out.

Three angels are sent down to bring good to the world: Gabriel, the warrior; Ivy, the healer; and Bethany, a teenage girl who is the least experienced of the trio. But she is the most human, and when she is romantically drawn to a mortal boy, the angels fear she will not be strong enough to save anyone-especially herself-from the Dark Forces.

Is love a great enough power against evil?

Sorry my blog has been rather un-book related recently but right now I’ve mainly been reblogging because of exams (one of which I have on Monday but as you can see I live on the edge).
This is a book I read a month ago and I’ve been meaning to do a review but again- revision is my life right now.
Okay, so upon reading the first few chapters I really wasn’t that drawn in but I found the concept so interesting that I kept with it. And I’m really glad I did.
Mind you, there were little things that ticked me off, like the chapter names (which went from numbers to names and it just wasn’t all that consistent) but I guess I’m just pedantic like that.
Basically the novel is set in the dystopian ‘Ludania’ where everyone is separated by the language they speak. Discrimination ensues with such a topic and I feel that’s a main theme as a lot of the issues discussed in the book are problems we deal with today; such as being put down due to the background you’re from or language you speak.
Englaise in the universal language understood by all but when in the presence of an individual from a higher class; should you make the smallest transgression like looking them in the eye whilst they speak in their native tongue, imminent death follows.
There is also a great deal of oppression as citizens daily make the ‘pledge’ that they devote themselves to the Queen who herself becomes a central conflict as the entity possessing the body must pass on to a healthier vessel before the current one dies.
This is where Charlie comes in to it for she has a forbidden talent – being able to understand every language.
And of course, as is the case with most teenage novels, a mysterious male became a questionable love interest. In this book it’s Max who develops an interesting attachment towards Charlie but more disturbingly, can speak in a language that she has never heard before.
I did enjoy the book but it was more of a fantasy than dystopian novel to me. I also didn’t find myself all that close to Charlie which left me a little detached from the plot.
All in all, there were a few issues I didn’t quite like but the idea leaves you thinking of similar acts of discrimination and I really like it when a novel stays with me like that.
I do recommend you read it if you’re looking for a fantasy/dystopian styled book because there is a particularly interesting twist in the middle of the novel that from that point on, will keep your eyes glued to the pages.

It’s a brave new world. ‘My name is Kyle Straker. And I don’t exist anymore.’ So begins the story of Kyle Straker, recorded on to old audio tapes. You might think these tapes are a hoax. But perhaps they contain the history of a past world…If what the tapes say are true, it means that everything we think we know is a lie. And if everything we know is a lie does that mean that we are, too?

What happens when you discover you aren’t who you thought you were? And that the person you love is the person who will betray you? If your fate is already determined, can you fight it?
When Evie Tremain discovers that she’s the last in a long line of Demon slayers and that she’s being hunted by an elite band of assassins –Shapeshifters, Vampires and Mixen demons amongst them – she knows she can’t run. They’ll find her wherever she goes. Instead she must learn to stand and fight.
But when the half-human, half-Shadow Warrior Lucas Gray - is sent to spy on Evie and then ordered to kill her before she can fulfil a dangerous prophecy, their fates become inextricably linked. The war that has raged for one thousand years between humans and demons is about to reach a devastating and inevitable conclusion. Either one or both of them will die before this war ends.
If your life becomes bound to another’s, what will it take to sever it?

‘Ascend’ (the third installment of the trylle trilogy) was released today in North America - the UK, Australia, South Africa, India, and Asia have to wait until the 26th. Originally I wasn’t too excited by it but now that I’ve had some time to think the last book over, I really want to see how the trilogy is going to end.

Summary: Wendy Everly can barely remember what it was like to feel like a normal girl. She’d wished for her life to be different but everything is so much more complicated than she’d expected. And she certainly hadn’t dreamt she’d be getting married at eighteen to a man she didn’t love - all for the sake of duty. As the big day approaches, Wendy can’t stop thinking about two different men - and neither of them are her husband-to-be. Finn - quiet, strong and determined to do what’s right, and Loki - dark and seductive, a sworn enemy who once saved her life. With all-out war just days away, Wendy needs to act quickly if she is to save her friends and family. But while her loyalties and duties are to her people, deeper passions are leading her elsewhere. And as her worlds collide, Wendy must sacrifice everything she loves to save them. But will it be enough?

Luckily, with the end of this trilogy another is beginning. Hocking announced news of the ‘Watersong’ trilogy. The first installment, ‘Wake’ will be released on the 7th of August this year and I’m really looking forward to this one:

Beautiful. Fearless. Dangerous. They’re the kind of girls you envy; the kind of girls you want to hate. Strangers in town for the summer, Penn, Thea, and Lexi have caught everyone’s attention, including the eye of practical Harper. But it’s her sister, Gemma, they’ve chosen to be part of their group. Sixteen-year-old Gemma seems to have it all - carefree, pretty, and falling in love with the boy next door. But her greatest passion has always been the water. She craves late night swims under the stars, where she can be alone yet belong to the sea. Lately she’s had company. Penn, Thea, and Lexi spend their nights dancing, singing, and partying on the cove - and one night Gemma joins them. When she wakes up groggy on the beach the next morning, she knows something has changed. Suddenly Gemma is stronger, faster, and more beautiful than ever. As she uncovers the truth about her new mythical powers, Gemma is forced to choose between staying with those she loves or entering a dark world brimming with unimaginable secrets.

Read an excerpt here.

So yeah, it’s a good year for Amanda Hocking fans.
